I’m still super thankful for that, it’s amazing. It’s always a rush to upload something you know thousands or millions of people might see - 99 percent of people are nice and appreciate new and original stuff. I guess that’s why I took some time away from it, to focus on making music without that pressure and workload, but I’m working my way back into it. Each new video generates a lot of work for me in emails and random inquiries. RJ: There’s a bit more pressure to release the “in-your-face” stuff. LEO: How has your relationship with YouTube changed, if at all, through the years? I’m starting to use VSTs a lot more often these days, so the USB keyboard is getting more and more use. I have an old Korg Triton LE and a Yamaha Motif XS8 that I use for some “live” playing on the tracks, and a USB midi keyboard to control FL Studio. RJ: I use FL Studio for just about everything. LEO: What sort of programs and equipment do you make everything on? Do you do all the mixing and mastering as well? I was worried at first that it would be compared to the “Knight Rider” theme, with that driving arpeggio synth throughout. RJ: “Speaker 1, Speaker 1” was definitely influenced by that time period. LEO: This record reminds me of a lot of great ’80s soundtrack music, from John Carpenter films to Jan Hammer’s “Miami Vice” score. I tried to be more patient with the tracks and let them evolve over the course of weeks, months … I also tried to cram more good stuff on the CD - 15 tracks this time! On this new album, I really branched out on what sounds I was using. Ronald Jenkees: I took some time to just write new stuff and let that be my focus. LEO: It’s been a few long years since your last album. Jenkees’ third album, Days Away, was released last month, and LEO caught up with the human meme to learn more. While his name may not be familiar, his homemade videos, which begin with his trademark “Hello, Youtubes!” greeting, have been on seen on YouTube many millions of times.Įarly fans included Katy Perry and ESPN’s Bill Simmons, who has used a Jenkees piece for his podcast’s theme music. Ronald, if you're reading this, I want you to know that over the past several years, I have enjoyed each new release more than the last and I really appreciate listening to your journey as an artist, and hearing you tweak and evolve your style while still retaining your distinct style.South End resident Ronald Jenkees has been making instrumental music with keyboards and computer programs - “massively popular trance-inducing jams,” says Gawker - for almost a decade now. You can tell he has put a lot of work into his productions, but Ronald's music never says "I made this to fill time." It says "I love this song because it is fun, and it has offered me a new way to express myself." Every track makes my head bob, and brings a smile to my face, because I can tell the man behind it had a great time making it and is proud to share it. The most important aspect of his music which I can tell he has not lost, is the sound of fun. It feels like he has grown into the big leagues, especially when compared to his earlier work.

So Alive is a track I can hear playing in a movie soundtrack or at the main stage at a festival, and again, I feel myself getting lost in the song. Rhodes Deep is the Ronald Jenkees I know and love, yet I can hear a highly developed style reminiscent of world famous AAA artists. Fall Drift is a song I have listened to back to back to back, and I can just let lost in the dreamlike rhythm. Each track was nuanced, each with its own unique flavor and style, yet they stay true and are recognizable as RJ's work. Alpha Numeric, in my humble opinion, was a revolution of his style. To me, the highlight was Seven Times, which felt the most soulful. Moving on to days away, there is more structure in his beats and more exploration in the tones and the way he utilizes them.

It's Ronald doing what he loves, just jamming the hell out on the keyboard and having a lot of fun with it. And dammit, he's done it again.īack in the day, on Disorganized Fun, it was simple loops with spectacular keyboard improvisation, like the fan favorite Stay Crunchy. Looking back at his previous albums and tracks, they are all fun and engaging, but I've been able to hear him improve every time.

Each new release has killer songs which really showcase his growth as an artist. With every new album he releases, Ronald's range and depth improve. I've listened to the album a couple times through now, and here's the reason I love Jenkees' music so much.Įvery album he has put out has been an improvement on the last one.
